Please fix branding issues       2/5/15
Hello,
My name is Trisha Ries, and I am the Local Community & Events Coordinator for That Fish Place - That Pet Place. I am currently working on fixing some branding issues that I have come across by utilizing a backlink search.
I saw on your page
http://wetwebmedia.com/wwmadminsubwebindex/adtrackdb.htm
that you have our name listed incorrectly. Our name should be listed as That Fish Place - That Pet Place.
<... this is not your site...>
It also appears that you have an outdated contact name listed. Please remove Jill Acland from this listing.
<Have done so>
If you would be so kind, can you please remove this listing?
<Listing? No>
Thank you so much.
Regards,
Trisha Ries

I do not have your local home number but here is what I need form you for us to make a decision today on the ad: <Oh, our SD number is 858 549 XXXX for your records> You mentioned a two for one deal but no specific cost related to that. To be up front it may be easier to let you know what our budget is that we have to work with and we can get for that. We are looking at $300 max per month at this time. Subject: The Big Island... Notes to Bob and Jeff
Hey Rene! Thank you for taking the time to chat this AM... For your kin's upcoming visit: Do make sure to pick up a cooler either at the King's Shops or Costco, Kmart, Wal-Mart... these are great places on the Big Island... for packing sodas et al. during your stay... going to, from the hotel... Though is a haul over the rough hallways there at the Hilton in Waikoloa... Maybe two coolers. While you're there, do call on Gerald Heslinga (if he'll see you... he's more than a bit of a recluse) at Indo-Pacific Sea Farms... and Carol and Craig at OceanRider (they're listed in the local phone books)... down at NELHA (just south of the airport/Keohole... Make sure and get in a "pizza night" down at Kona Brewing Company... in town (Kailua Old Industrial)... And the usual pitches for nice beaches... Hapuna (public) and Mauna Kea's (private, go early to get a parking placard... it's free otherwise)... Up for adventure? Got to make a run down to Kilauea Volcano Park... a day or so at Hilo's waterfalls et al... (do bring some lightweight rain gear if you have it... and flashlights if you're going to stay till dark to see the lava... And Waipio... a haul but real fun... And Parker Ranch has many attractions for young folks... Do look in "101 Things to do on the Big Island"... a circular at the Airport... esp. for the coupons for discounts, two-fors... And don't be shy re asking the locals what they do, where they eat et al... there are many great things to experience there... I will be out (at "A" Bay just south of where you're staying) for the Lavaman tri, but leaving unfortunately a day ahead of your arrival... Do send along your cell numbers (I don't have one...) and I'll call you if I extend. Our house number there is 808 331 0889. Cheers, Bob Fenner

Why Advertise with WetWebMedia? If your company has a website or pays dearly for print and/or internet advertising we encourage you to look at what your ROI could be by advertising on WetWebMedia. What the WetWebMedia website ultimately offers is information and inspiration for hobbyists, your customers, keeping them in the hobby, by helping keep their corals, plants, fishes, and other organisms alive and healthy. This obviously benefits everyone. By sponsoring WetWebMedia you ultimately will realize more customers because they will stay in the hobby rather than getting discouraged and giving it up for good. WetWebMedia.com is dedicated to providing accurate, timely, useful information the hobbyists need, fighting this trend. Ad Placement and Pricing We offer two areas for your logo or banner on our website, the right sidebar and the top border. The top Rotating Banner spot is 468 by 60 pixels and is the premium spot for an ad, receiving about a million views per month. Your Rotating Banner Ads. Adding or switching to WetWebMedia.com  -- 03/09/07 Hi Bob, <Marc!> This is Marc Levenson, whom you met and had a drink with last year at Next Wave in Fort Worth.  We talked about my podcast show for a little bit, and I've been hoping one day to call you up and do a phone interview for the show.  We too love to drink, so the show would be quite interesting.  LOL <Heeee. Oh yes> Thanks for  the offer to run a banner on WWM.  I'm running one on Reef Central right now, and don't really have the additional funds to stick another one anywhere yet.  I'm sure you can understand.  I'm selling RO/DI units from my website in case you didn't know. <Ah, yes. I saw this> I'm glad WWM is still going strong.  Your baby has really grown into a giant site.  Melevsreef.com is tracking about 36000 unique visitors a month at the moment, something you do in two days! Marc <Yes... Thank you for this response Marc. Hope to see you about. BobF>

WetWebMedia advertising Hey Bob, I spoke to Anthony Calfo today about advertising my store and website on Wetweb Media. He said to send you an email for info. He also said you could provide me with the ability to view the statistics of the site which may help me make a decision. <Yep. As a matter of fact I'll use this opportunity to re-send the same info. to our crew: the stats server URL is: http://stats11.datapipe.com/ The Server ID: WetWebMedia.com Username: Admin Password: $apple$> If you are able, please provide pricing and all advertising options. At the very least, I would love to have a link to my site on yours. (Anthony mentioned something about this) My website address is www.saltycritter.com . <Hotay. Will do one better and send along your message to friend/cohort Mike Kaechele, our marketing mgr. for response> Thanks in advance! Thought you should know... (Plagiarism at Marine Depot) Hello.  First of all, I adore your website and have to say thank you for all the great advice.  Secondly, I'm not sure if this is of any significance or not, But I was doing a lot of fish-surfing today, and noticed that there are several lines that appear in your puffer article http://www.wetwebmedia.com/puffers.htm that are perfectly duplicated on Marine Depot's website http://www.marinedepotlive.com/653754.html.  The lines read as follows: "The closest thing to an "aqua-dog" are the puffers. Except they will bite the hand that feeds them, and you might croak if you give them a kissy. Do you have a spot in a fish-only system, maybe with plenty of algae growth, or want to get rid of that mantis shrimp that has eaten everything else? Porky the puffer's awaiting your call." <Time to send them a bill> I don't know if you are affiliated with them or not, but I just wanted to let you know to be on the safe side in the case that this is not legit. Again, thank you for the wonderful website! ~Kara <Thanks much. I did sell Ken Wong (Marine Depot owner) a bunch of pix years back for his use... but not the WWM text... much of which is not of my origination... Will bring to his attention. Bob Fenner>

Re NMA RI printing/binding et al. costs and CA and WWM and WWF <Jas had a good argument for setting a "set fee" per 30k views/mo...  Jas? Bob> Yep, we talked about several different types of packaging. I am trying to give some of the little guys a way in for $200 per mo. and a slight break for those who can handle the 30,000/$500 deal like we have now on WWM. It's still a 30K set fee for that package. We could also give the same breaks to the little guys with term contracts, cash payment in advance, etc. (.016 per hit) This is still less than RC, etc. and with *much* greater exposure. A darned good deal. I'm not worried about this as long as everyone is happy with the structure. I can sell it anyway it's set-up as long as it makes sense. Craig <I bet you can, will. Bob>

Subject: Re: Advertising <Hotay big boy... send along their link/ad logo... and I'll place umm, in March 1 I guess... though they should be advertising now! Re NMA RI printing/binding et al. costs and CA and WWM and WWF It would be nice to sell the ad space in the freshwater, pond, and plant subcategories to companies such as Tetra, Hagen, Eheim, Danner/Supreme ... We really need someone with an ad background/sales in our crew. Also, Boyd, Poly-Bio-Marine, and SpectraPure should be advertising with us. They all spend good money on print ads and we regard them highly. -Steven Pro <Good ID's Steven. Most of all such a person/effort just entails contacting these companies, finding out who to pursue (who has the authority), making the offer, and getting the okay... making, placing their ad/links is easy. Bob>

WWF This is my take Mike. We have three sites and one with ads. WWM has the block ads in the header but we really need to sell banner ads on the other sites. When you start to play with per hit prices the pricing structure and header ads on WWM get in the way. But they make the money right now........ Making a change to the ads and pricing structure is necessary to move forward. I suggest a package for all three with an appropriate price break for supporting all three or simply a total number of hits to be spread over all the sites in appropriate headings (FW, ponds, marine, etc.). One size fits all. There are plenty of potential advertisers that would surely love the exposure they would get from WWM/CA/WWF. Also, I suggest we involve our readers. Zo found a T-shirt site that will print, take orders and ship hats, t-shirts etc. With another outfit doing the work this could be a good form of passive income within 30 day or so. <I say please go ahead with any/all of these plans. Including the tee's. How much money do we need to get them going (white print against black or something colorful?). Bob> Craig

Re: CQUARIUM Bob et. al., I noticed recently that CQUARIUM is no longer a listed sponsor of the site. Once more, I had placed an order with them in the past which I was not satisfied with. I was wondering if they are no longer a sponsor for a specific reason, moreover, they have a ton of rare clams listed, but 90% of them are gapping and will without a doubt not survive, Just curious.. <Don't know these folks, they are not sponsors of WWM. Bob Fenner>

site sponsorship Robert, I have two questions: 1) The 11-15-02 billing for October is for $400 which is double the previous billings. Has the monthly rate gone up or is the bill in error?  <Mmm, checking. My error. The ledger shows the valid/current AP as $200... I must've mis-keyed the charge on the invoice. Sorry re> If you sent out notice of the rate going up I apologize as I do not recall it now. If it has gone up to $400 a month I'm going to have analyze our web logs and get back to you on whether the increased cost is going to pay off for us in terms of increased web traffic and let you know if we will continue sponsorship. <Appreciate this, but no change in charge amounts. Though we're beyond the 7,000k unique ISP sessions per day mark, we hope to be bringing our online zine online... and using it for further "revenue". Not the root web.> Also, I just briefly visited the site to day and noticed several pages on the site where the "Sponsors Websites" logo is present but the sponsors pictures (including Seachem's) does not show up (tried both Netscape and Explorer). here are a few: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/FWSubWebIndex/fwsubwebindex.htm  http://www.wetwebmedia.com/PlantedTksSubWebIndex/AquariumGardenSubWebIndex.html  http://www.wetwebmedia.com/BrackishSubWebIndex/BrackishSubWebIndex.htm  http://www.wetwebmedia.com/AqBizSubWebIndex/Biz%20Index/Biz%20index.htm  <Oh, yes... these are subwebs (other than the marine, reef) which incur further charge for sponsorship. Currently the rates for these are half the root web charge (per): Brackish, Planted Tanks, Freshwater, Pond, Business> would these be a technical glitch? why would our sponsorship logo not appear on these pages? My obvious concern is that we are paying for something and not receiving the full benefit of that payment... <I understand. About a year back we found ourselves building and moving non-marine content to new divisions (subwebs) as the site is/was too big to run universal routines (like recalculating hyperlinks), and slowing down if/when if was being crawled (daily) by Google... and wanted to prevent the folks working on various parts from having to wait when working on the same pages, shared borders... There was a note sent out re these subwebs, changes, but as yet not enough traffic on them to warrant "selling" their space (much going on to fill many article and image gaps). Would SeaChem be interested in adding a right shared border link to any/all of these subwebs? The cost per is $100 per month, or all five for $300. Thank you for your notice, and again I apologize for the mis-billing. Bob Fenner, WWM> Gregory Morin, Ph.D. ~~~~~~~President/CEO~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Seachem Laboratories, Inc. www.seachem.com 888-SEACHEM

Pond Section Advertisement Possibility Bob, I'm going to go talk to Pat Hurley tommorow. He wants to sell some Sequence Pond pumps and I want to get him to advertise with WWM. Can we offer him any kind of special on advertising in the Pond section since there is currently no advertisement located there? Please advise. <Thanks for the interest. Six hundred if both desired... for three months... paid up front. Bob F> Thanks, Dave

Good news!! Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2002 13:09:35 -0700 (PDT) Bob, I just closed the deal to sell two top ad banners on the WWM. Dr's Foster & Smith bought 2 spots on the Marine or Main section for $1000.00 per month and the checks in the mail. They are also interested in advertising on the Freshwater, Pond, Brackish, and Plants sections if we can cut them a deal for everything. I already offered them a 10 percent reduction on a package deal but that wasn't good enough. We need to consider a further reduction. I hope your trip is going well and say hi to Di for me. <Great Mike. Glad to see your note ahead of returning their calls here... Do contact them if you will and make a deal for the other subweb spaces... Most any amount for this year (03) is fine. Another 1k/mo. sounds fine to me. Bob> Mike Kaechele

Re: Ad I just took a look and it looks fine. There's only one problem with it now, when you look at the page with your screen resolution set at 800X600, the Marine Center ad jumps down one line making the entire top shared border double size in height. I think we'll just have to live with that. Mike <Agreed... I have thought over this eventuality and looked at a couple of different ways to present so many banners... this was best for now. Bob>

Subject: Ad Bob, Please use the attached ad for placement on the Marine Section. It has a little blue streak across the top which will look better on the site. having just the one with the blue streak looks "funny"... Will show you when you're over if you'd like. Bob> Mike

Confusion Bob, I'm confused by the current ad structure on the WWM site. The ad's appear on some pages and not on others. It's hard to explain to people and I think that if some of our present advertisers discover that they are not on every page in the site they will become upset. When we originally signed up some of these folks we told them their ad would appear on every single page.  <Yikes... do recall this... but have been sending monthly updates with billings to all, explaining the logic... And almost all present sponsors principal biz is marine/reef.> I think we should simplify the pricing and placement structure and make the price $150.00 for the top banner per Subweb and perhaps $100.00 per month per Subweb for the side banners. We should add the existing sponsors onto the other sections for what they are already paying and anyone new who signs on will pay the separate fees. I dunno? We need to standardize this, it's too confusing, or maybe I'm the only one who's confused. <Sounds fine... but would rather stick with present position: Half price for all Subweb placement as per the root... A bargain I assure you. Bob> Mike

Re: advt. inquiry Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 00:39:26 EDT Hi Bob Fenner, Thank you for taking time and replying on this matter. It is kind of expensive advt. when you charge section wise (Subweb), isn't it? Usually annual rate for a static banner advt. for 10000 hits per day sites runs below $150 per month. We will probably run our advt. will an over 100 different sites (mainly non-aquarium related sites) by the year end and would like to watch our budget carefully so it does go out of our reach. Thank you. -Sam Rawlinson Foryourfish.com 8/9/02 <I appreciate your concern. Am familiar with others (reefs.org, reefcentral...) rates at $150 per 5-10,000 hits per MONTH, not day... we have about (not counting cache'd and foreign versions of our site) five thousand unique ISP sessions per day (please see our statistics tool: http://stats2.datapipe.com/_1026391600_/ password: WetWebMedia.com). We can make you a comprehensive deal if you'd like your banner/logo/link placed on more than our root and a few sub webs. Please send along the size/type of banner you have in mind, and we will respond with a pricing schedule. Bob Fenner><Thanks Michael. Yes, Sam, the sites are arranged so folks with only part of the ornamental trade as a market can direct folks to their business, or to various parts. Your business is involved in almost all facets (as I've seen by perusing your site), and so we encourage your participation in as many of the sub webs (other than marine/reef which is our "root") at half the cost per billing period as Mike has linked. Please do re-contact us should you have other questions, concerns. Bob Fenner, WetWebMedia.>

In fact, banners can impact the traditional marketing measures of...'¦ Advertisement awareness Brand awareness Brand perceptions Potential for sales Product attribute communication Purchase intent ...all from one exposure Given that the Web's advertising power is just beginning to be understood, any advertiser looking to build their brand and increase their sales should utilize online advertising alongside traditional media to ensure their future success. online ads <Outstanding. Will post and send to WWM Crew. I am of the same stance as the position here. Bob F> New online advertising strategies By Patrick Joseph Even before the dot-com implosion left online publishers desperate for ad dollars, advertising on the Web was becoming a difficult sell. The early promise of the medium seemed to wither on the vine as click-through rates plummeted to a dismal average of between 0.3 percent and 0.5 percent. Now, with the recent economic downturn stretching ad budgets thin, online ad space has become a buyer's market, and many publishers find themselves having to accept unfavorable cost-per-action (CPA) deals, as opposed to the more traditional cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) arrangements, in order to survive. In response to that pressure, the ad industry began trotting out figures showing that Internet advertising works as well--and in much the same way--as advertisements in traditional media such as print, radio, and television. New studies suggest that online ads not only promote direct response (namely, click-throughs) but also brand awareness. A report commissioned by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), for example, showed that consumers' immediate brand recognition was increased by exposure to banner ads by a factor of 2 to 7 percent. A Morgan Stanley report released in February put the figures even higher. DoubleClick and MSN released studies with similar results. Taken together, the upshot of the data was clear: banners work even when consumers don't click them. Furthermore, the effectiveness of ads was greatly impacted by such elements as size and format. Not surprisingly, large banners proved more effective than smaller ones, and dynamic ads, such as those using Flash animations, outperformed their static counterparts.

WetWebMedia is a website that offers aquarium, Pond, and general aquatics information by author and photographer Robert Fenner. He has been in the aquarium/aquatic trade for over 30 years. The WetWebMedia website is currently receiving over 5000 visitors a day from all over the world. If your company has a website or you pay dearly for print advertising that has questionable return on your investment, then you need to look at what your RIO could be by advertising on and becoming a sponsor with WetWebMedia. What the WetWebMedia website ultimately does is offer information and answers for the hobbyists, keeping them in the hobby, and keeping their corals, plants, and fishes, alive and healthy. This benefits everyone. By sponsoring WetWebMedia you ultimately will realize more customers because they will stay in the hobby rather than getting discouraged and leaving for good. It is estimated that 80-90 percent of hobbyists, your customers, give up on the hobby within 1 year. WetWebMedia.com is dedicated to We offer two areas for your logo on our website, the right sidebar and the top border. The top border spot is larger and is the prime spot for an ad. The rate for placement on the top border is $500 per month. The right sidebar is also popular and the rates for placement there are only $200 per month. We also offer a 10 percent discount for longer terms. In addition placement is available on individual sections of the website for half the previously mentioned rates. We at WetWebMedia.com have advertising that will suit anyone's pricing and visibility needs. For little more than $7.00 dollars per day, your ad or banner will be seen by thousands of hobbyists daily. Presently WetWebMedia has several satisfied sponsors including; Aqua C Skimmers, Custom Aquatics, CPR Aquatics, Ecosystem Aquarium, Flying Fish Express, Knop, Marine- Center, Reef Splendor, Seachem, Walt Smith International. I suspect it would be money very well spent by TF indeed. The site gets over 20,000 unique ISPs per week! And some weeks that is a serious understatement...More than 35k last > <<WOW!!!>> <<often we have days with over 5,000 unique ISP's in a single day and its been consistently growing larger. I think WWM is a great source of information (the WWM crew's books are wonderful as well). What I really like about WWM is that you guys seem to have the same mentality about fish keeping (and learning in general) as I do.  The information is there for people to read and learn (which they need to do if they really want to keep an aquarium) and you guys encourage that...you don't just give them a quick answer to a general question, you tell them to read ALL the information in the appropriate section(s)....chances are the person asking the question really would benefit from reading all the information. <<Ahh! Outstanding... You GET it!>> I truly thank you for passing it along and ask you to feel welcome to share this message with Scott/TFP gang if you like. I'll be sure to pass this along to Bob and Mike (marketing on our WWM crew) and someone will be in touch with Scott soon with information. As far as the digital cover art for my book... yes, I was directed where to resend the file and trust that it got into the right hands. Scott even called personally and left a message of goodwill. Very nice to see the top brass so hands-on <smile>. And you were correct that the WetWebMedia crew are off soon for Deutschland. Bob is trekking on afterwards to the Red Sea to dive with most of the crew... I'm flying back to the states to come home to my missed family and kitty <G> and to help the poor skeleton crew of WWM with the site...heehee.  I look forward to hearing from you again! With kind regards, Anthony Calfo <Be chatting and more, Bob Fenner> I worked at TFP (in The Fish Room) and I have remained friends over the years with Scott and a few others that work there. As far as talking with Scott...I wasn't doing a sales pitch or anything I just happen to mention WWM and he asked if you guys charge for the site (Q&A's) and I said no, and that I thought it might be run by advertising but, that I wasn't sure. Hey...I figure it's a win-win situation for all involved! :-) By the way...I had a little excitement here today. My Texas Cichlids (Pearlscales) laid eggs today for the first time!!! The only bummer about it was that they started to "go through the motions" before I turned the light on and then I didn't want to turn it on and mess them up...so, my attempt to record it with my digital camera wasn't too good. I got some video but, not as nice as it would have been with the light on. I was a little surprised that they just kept on going about their business with me right up at the tank...it was very cool!!! Take Care! Ann  <Mmm, congratulations. Will pass on your note to Mike.K, our designated marketing whip. Thank you. Bob Fenner>

Re: some info for you We are all trying to sell the ad space on the WWM/WWF websites, so there isn't any stepping on toes here. If someone gets a lead they should pursue it. I think Peter even has a friend of his working on this too. Pete, how is Patty doing? I will be happy to follow up on this, if you would like. I am pretty sure I have already had correspondence with Ann and "That Fish Place", regarding the purchase of ad space, and they declined. Re: advertising, and help, make that HELP re WWM Bob, That was going to be my next offer if Philippe isn't interested in the first. An important mention here re WWM. Our stat's for Thurs. just jumped more than ten percent from the historical, recent averages... Folks who like, use the info., inspiration are spreading the word re the sites...  A bit of backgd. re how WWM was "started"... in part as a reflex-defensive mechanism to "respond"/offer input to help aquarists, potential aquarists be successful (I can, will define my terms if you'd like)... Am happy to delighted to find our crew (present and future) referring incoming queries, commentators to archives, articles (we need to keep generating more "complete" stories here...), the Chatforum, WWF... and generate some/more revenue for upcoming events, adventures...  So, my request, to layer it on top of Mike.K's is for input re how to grade into our growth... Re: advertising My suggestion is that it is best to throw all the options on the table, all at once. If you only throw out the high-dollar amount first, you may cause significant enough defribulation that you'd never get any take on the second try. <This is wise, bud-wise, wait not that... Naturally lite? No, please no! We should have a "rate card" of sorts with all the options spelled out, listing the WWF site, Chatforum, Sub-Web and Root URL's, features, costs, examples... Bob Fenner> Just my two cents. <Worth much more> J --

RE: advertising Excellent ideas! How about 10% discount if they prepay for 6 months, 20% discount for a year, half price for placement on an individual Subweb, with the same discounts applying. This is great, we'll have a comprehensive price structure for the Izoo show. We are going to be busy. <Sounds good. Bob F> Mike

Re: advertising I was just going to throw my two cents in here. In reference to the various charges and main page vs. sub webs, something like, "We at WetWebMedia.com have advertising that will suit anyone's pricing and visibility needs."  <Good spiel> No sense for a pond pump manufacturer to have to pay to advertise in the marine section in their pumps use a non-saltwater safe stainless steel shaft, etc. -Steven Pro <Here here, well-stated. Re: Sponsor  (Dave's) <Miguel, please get me an address to send our invoices. When they bring their acct. up to date, I will re-post their link. Bob F> Yes get me an invoice and let's get back on track.. Dave -------------------- Bob, This message is a response I got from the guy at Dave's Reefpure, The sponsor we had on the site for a short while, who didn't pay up. I contacted him asking if he still wants to advertise on the WWM, and it appears he does. How should I handle this? I would like to get them to pay up front before we re-place their ad on to the site. Should we charge them for the time(almost a month) that they were on there? Let me know what we should do. Mike

"Lost" WWM sponsors Miguel, have dropped off Coral Dynamics (per their ltr. re budget constraints) and Dave's Reef Pure (for total lack of payment)... Do hope Anthony.C was good at softening the ad field for us... and Pete and I are chatting up Patti Duffy re the possibility of her "aggressively" (but in a nice way) seriously pursuing sponsor/advertising for the sites. Do think this could be a great stimulus/jump... and hope you can make the dinner/meeting... sometime this week/end. Bob

Efforts to sell ad space Gang, we need to get a move-on with attempts and success at selling the freshwater and pond sub-web space (not to mention "finishing" the Marine)... after hundreds of hours separating the content, no sponsors? Has anyone contacted the companies listed on the new Pond Links page for instance?  Should we farm this function out? Bob F

Re: Efforts to sell ad space Since I will be at the Backer show this weekend... is there something/some numbers I could pitch to the bigger/targeted venders there for WWM. <Yes! Miguel, please aid Anthony here. Our general spiel, costs are posted on WWM: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/sponsors.htm and more> Mike/Bob... perhaps I could trouble you to throw together a one page simple intro to WWM for Advertisers? Basic who we are, what we do, traffic numbers and ad rates? <Miguel, this is your rabbit> I must admit, although I'm a people person... I'm not one of those great "sell ice to an Eskimo" salespeople. Still... I will do my best and give it a very honest effort if you see it fit. <You are very facile with folks... and we don't really have to (and in my opinion want to) "sell" our services... they will do so themselves with exposure... Consider... You are helping to build their and our trade, as well as aid "end-users" (consumers, hobbyists aka) in being successful. Bob F> Antoine

Re: Efforts to sell ad space I've contacted a few potential sponsors with no replies, or they find the cost outside of their budget. <Do follow up... about the seventh to ninth contact is about the limit of "what works"... Cost? I do state that our "money per exposure" compared to what these same folks are already paying (in print ads, in-service staff, their web-sites...) is CHEAP! by comparison. Ask them to contact our current advertisers for their opinion on the merits of WWM> If anyone has any other ideas or potential sponsors, go get em. The cost for advertising is $200 per month for the side and $500 per month for the top. Bob and I discussed offering a 10 percent discount if someone signs up for a longer term (1 year). Let me know if I can assist anyone, in anyway. I will continue trying to contact various potentials and good luck in your efforts. <Real good Miguel, you're still our marketing point person. Re: Efforts to sell ad space Here is what I have been following up my initial sponsor plea with (see below). The initial sponsor plea is here-->http://www.wetwebmedia.com/sponsors.htm <Good... to the point... and speedy reply. Bob> Mike ----------------- Thanks for showing interest in becoming an advertiser/sponsor on the WetWebMedia website. Our website has been in existence for over 2 years and it has a loyal following that is continuing to grow every day. Currently we have over 5000 people per day from all over the world visiting our website and that number keeps growing (statistics available on request). You currently spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on print advertising in the hobbyist/trade magazines that have limited exposure and circulation. When you put your icon/logo on the WetWebMedia website it is visible to every visitor on every page they view. Your logo will also be a link leading to your website and products. We have had a positive response from the many fine companies who have already chosen to become sponsors and they are very happy with the service, value and exposure they receive on our website. We offer two areas for your logo on our website, the right sidebar and the top border. The top border spot is larger and is the prime spot for an ad. The rate for placement on the top border is $500 per month. The right sidebar is also popular and the rates for placement there are only $200 per month. We also offer a 10 percent discount for longer terms. Just send me an example of the logo that you wish to place on the site and I will place it there for you to see. By advertising on the WetWebMedia website you will be exposed to far more hobbyist/customers than the number who see your ads in the magazines, at a fraction of the cost. Please let me know how you want to proceed and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Mike Kaechele WetWebMedia Marketing Team [email protected]

Nothing recorded as rec'd or actually rec'd> They told me they had. Let me know and I'll chase them down. <Mmm, don't see a check or history of same. Nowhere> Cheers, Mike PS- Thanks for din-din last night, it was great. <Thanks for your co., biers. See you soon. Bob F>

A good article with possible applicability to the WWM and WWF End of the line for free Web? By CNN's Abid Ali and Mayanna Dietz <This is definitely coming... Well, I can remember way back when television viewing/content was "free"... Bob F, who intends to be on the receiving end of this money trough. Join me.> LONDON, England (CNN) -- Web users around the world may soon be recalling the phrase: "There is no such thing as a free lunch." The maxim, generally attributed to U.S. economist Milton Friedman, has been taken up by media companies which plan to end Web users' much-cherished right to roam the Net freely for content. In an experiment watched closely by Net surfers and media firms globally, 20 of Norway's biggest media companies have decided they can no longer stomach losses at their Internet divisions. "We cannot produce content without someone paying for it," Christian Lind, head of sales and Internet at TV-2, the biggest commercial broadcaster in Norway, told CNN. "It is hard to sell banners and get sponsorship, so the content has to be paid for." In a unique agreement, the television company and government-owned broadcaster NRK, along with newspaper groups Stavenger Aftenblad, Stocklink and Haugesunds Avis, have decided that users visiting their sites will have to pay for some content. While TV-2 will not divulge how much it is spending on its Internet site, UK publishers annually splash out an average £2.6 million (4.3 million euros) on creating or acquiring content, according to global research company Forrester. As advertisers cut back on spending during a global economic slump, media companies like German goliath Bertelsmann, France's Vivendi Universal and AOL Time Warner of the U.S., the parent of CNN, will be scrutinising Norway's experiment. TV-2 says the decision to start charging for selected content has been driven by a dispute between content providers and telephone companies Telenor and NetCom over revenue from Short Messaging Service (SMS), or text messaging. Telenor and NetCom have been retaining around 45 percent of all revenue from text messages, the content of which was provided by the likes of TV2. Now the 20 Norwegian firms have combined to form a group known as Innholdsnett, that wants to control its revenue streams. E-Solutions, an Oslo-based software house, came up with a system that allows media companies to retain their rights to content and revenue. E-Solutions plans to charge users 1,000 Norwegian crowns ($100) up front for timed access to content and then distribute the cash to media companies. NRK has already scored a degree of success in charging for content after 3,000 people registered to view clips of comedy shows over the Web. But the "killer" content that it is anticipated will really pull the punters in is the Norwegian football season, which kicks off after a winter break in April, TV2's Lind said. Germany's T-Online, Europe's biggest Internet company, plans to offers clips from Bundesliga, the country's top football league, this month. In other experiments across Europe, Britain's Independent Television (ITV) charged '¬2.40 for footage that was left out of its broadcast of real-life TV survival game Survivor, while Freeserve, owned by France Telecom's Internet Service Provider (ISP) Wanadoo, offered boxing fans exclusive live web casts from the Lennox Lewis camp before and after the World Title Fight with Hasim Rahman in South Africa for '¬1.60 a day. In an attempt to make the Net pay after spending billions of euros to expand, Freenet and T-Online launched adult portals in Germany and Spain. Freenet's Fundorado.de offers links to soft erotic channels, while Yahoo stopped selling hard core porn videos after it came in for a barrage of criticism. The difference between Norway and the rest of Europe is that the Norwegians are seeking to create a "level playing field" that will allow media companies access to a billing system aimed at avoiding the sort of bankcruptcies that were seen when the dotcom bubble burst. Cool reception for Net charges But not everyone is happy. Signe Kjøs, the Norwegian editor of IFORM magazine, told CNN that not many people were aware of the plan to charge for content. She was surprised to find that she was charged for an article from newspaper site, Aftenposten. She said: "It will make our work a lot more difficult, because obviously we cannot pay for every single web site we want to look at. It will be too expensive and time consuming and very annoying if you pay and discover that there is nothing of interest there. "It would probably lead us to look for information elsewhere, through other channels. As the Norwegian editor of I FORM, I browse through a lot of Web sites every day, and I seldom have use for the same one more than once." Internet analysts at J.P Morgan said all ISP/Portals have begun to charge for content as they test consumers' appetites. This is part of the end game of "monetising" users but it is also driven, in part, by the need to diversify revenue streams. "We believe consumers will only be willing to pay for content that is unique, enriching, entertaining, convenient or pornographic. Moreover, we believe broadband is a prerequisite for much of this content," one analyst told CNN. The UK's BT Group, formerly known as British Telecommunications, recognised that its future growth depended on rolling out high-speed Internet access and slashed the rate it sells services to ISP. Britain has the lowest take up of broadband connections in the Group of Seven industrialised nations, while Germany has some 2.2 million homes currently connected to such services. Broadband offers users the ability to download web pages quicker and access real-time video. But Forrester Research analyst, Rebecca Ulph, told CNN that payment for Internet content would only work if there was a barrier preventing users from getting the content free elsewhere, and providers could charge no more than the cost of a monthly magazine subscription. "The development in Norway is interesting, but a similar strategy would be difficult to negotiate in the UK or the U.S. where there are many more content providers," she said. "In countries with large numbers of media groups, similar negotiations are more likely to take place on a media-owner basis. "Norway's experiment might be successful because it would be difficult to find local language content for Norwegians elsewhere," Ulph added. "Users in the UK, on the other hand, would probably be quite happy to go to other English language sites from the U.S. or Canada."

Re: A good article with possible applicability to the WWM and WWF Let them eat burnt corn muffins. So silly - ask Salon how well their subscription program is going.... <We'll see... in a few years... the "worthwhile" content will not be so free... I'd bet most anything on it/this. Bob F.>

Re: A good article with possible applicability to the WWM and WWF Oh for certain, but "willingness to pay" <Zackly what I am my friend> Think of nabster - no one wanted to pay. <They will... the comparison continues with the "crap" free content on teevee now and who doesn't pay to get something "more"... (not necessarily better). Like your mom used to say to your queries of "can we stop and get ice-cream?".... "We'll see". Bob F> J --

Latest Sponsor Bob, Has the latest sponsor (Dave www.reefpure.net) payed up yet. If not I'll follow up. I need a new pair of dive fins. We need to get together (this weekend?) soon to go over the accounting practices you have in place for the WWM. <No to having paid up... need to have a better system to track? Can, will notify you monthly at least re who is in arrears. Bob F> Mike

Re: Latest Sponsor Bob, I'll think about a tracking system. Maybe some software such as Quicken, etc... Something automated. <Very good idea... we will want to move to a more automated mechanism... and one that is and appears more professional soon... BTW some big and scary (for you maybe) news... We may be in the magazine sales and distribution biz soon... Stay tuned with your bags/stairwell packed there. Bob F> Mike

Re: Advertising (Pond Sub-Web) Bob, Should we offer a discount if a sponsor signs up and pays for 6 months in advance? Perhaps 6 months for $1000? What says you? <Thought we had chatted this over already. I say $1000 for the upper spaces for the entire year (one payment), half that for the right shared for the year... does this sound too cheap? We have no present sponsors, there's not much participation from the public as yet (which the sponsorship will spur), and the use is seasonal... Bob F> Mike

FW: Skimmer selection, WWM support I just wanted to forward the following e-mail to you. I wanted to let you know that I appreciate advertisers that support your site and will let them know how I feel. I don't know if it is useful to you that I do this, but hopefully this will help with bring in advertising/sponsorship money. I added ">>>> <<<<" to highlight the relevant section to you. This is not something for your FAQ's. <Thank you for your support Enrique. Bob Fenner> Enrique Muyshondt -----Original Message----- To: [email protected] Subject: Skimmer selection I am in the process of setting up a new marine aquarium and would like to know the technical differences between the Urchin Pro and EV-120 skimmers. I am still undecided on the tank size but it will either be a 58 gallon or 75 gallon reef-ready tank. I intend to use a sump under the tank and use a Berlin method of filtration. The tank will house live rock and a few fish. I intend to build it up into a reef tank over time, starting with a few hardy invertebrates and soft corals. >>>>> I am pretty certain I want to use an AquaC unit based on the reading I've done at WetWebMedia. I am impressed by the praises I hear for your product and I appreciate your support of that site. <<<< I have narrowed down my choices to the Urchin Pro or the EV-120 or 180. There is a pretty significant price difference between these units (EV is about 2x the Urchin Pro) and I am not sure what the EV series provides over and above the Urchin Pro. I am willing to stretch a little for long term gain if there is really an advantage with the EV units. 1.) Will they remove waste more effectively/quickly? 2.) Is there a way to quantify this? 3.) Can you help me justify the additional money for the EV unit? 4.) For a 75 gal tank, is an EV-180 overkill (can you over skim a fish/invert/soft coral tank)? 5.) Would a Mag 7 pump be too much for an EV-120? There is only a small price difference with a Mag 5 and I was wondering if I should go ahead and get the large pump. One thing that is important to me is noise, since the tank will be close to our bedrooms. 6.) Is one unit quieter than the other? 7.) Also, can a Remora unit be used in a sump so if I later set up a tank that requires an HOT setup I can move the Remora there and put something else in the sump? I understand the Remora and Urchin are basically the same thing except for hanging on the tank or going in the sump. It seems having the hanging hardware could be useful later on. Sorry for all the questions but this tank is going to be a major investment and the skimmer is a major part of the cost. Thanks for any insights you might have! Henry Muyshondt

Banner Ad Placement Study After reading this study I guess those small ads on the side bar are actually in the prime location. Now back to reading the book you recommended, "Finite and Infinite Games". <This work will change your life. A finite game here is the perception, payment by folks for the ads... more even for the top. The infinite, what we do to keep the game in play, our living. Bob> Mike Theories and Methodology Banner Ad Placement Study Hypotheses We tested three theories for the impact of location on click-through: Ads next to the scroll bar will generate a higher click-through rate. Users are more likely to click next to the scroll bar because their pointer is already on the scroll bar, therefore it is convenient to click on the ad. (Link to study) Click-through will be higher if the ad is placed approximately 1/3 of the way down the page as opposed to at the top of the page. It is more likely that the user's eye will first focus 1/3 down the page. (Link to study) Two ads on a page (same product) will generate a higher click-through rate. It will be convenient for a user to click on the second ad at the bottom of the page, after reading the content of the page. (Link to study) All data was collected on Webreference.com between 3/25/97 and 4/15/97. Variables Dependent Variable: Click-through rate = # clicks on the banner ad/number of page impressions Independent Variable: Location of ad on the web page (3 different locations were tested). External Variables: These variables were identified as important to the determination of click-through, but were external to our study. Therefore, after each variable is a description of how we attempted to isolate the effects of the variable from the study. 1. Banner ad content The same ad was used in both locations for each of the three studies. Then, the relative impact at each location was measured by comparing the differences between the click-throughs. Two different companies' ads were also tested for each study. 2. Matching of the ad content to the web page The ads were run on the same page at both locations for each study. Then, the relative impact at each location was measured by comparing the differences between the click-through rates. To the extent possible, advertising was matched to the content of the page. Due to limited time available to run the studies, placing the ads on high traffic pages, linked to the front page of the site, was a high priority. 3. Banner ad burnout This is the phenomenon reported by Double Click where the number of click-throughs for a given ad declines quickly with each view of the ad. Our goal was to control this variable by using all new advertising for this study. In the actual studies, however, the goal was not always obtainable. The following ads had new artwork shown for the first time on Webreference.com during this study: Star Wars/Hasbro, Shop Site, and Digital Frontiers. 4. Ad size Only two ad sizes were used for this study. A 468 x 60 pixel ad was used as the full-size ad running across the page. The 125 x 125 pixel ad was used in the first study to measure the top of page vs. side of page location. The 468 x 60 pixel ad could not be run at the side location, which was the rationale for including the smaller size ad. Note on click-through: Click-through percentages should be evaluated by their differences within each study. The absolute percentages are not comparable across studies due to the external variables.

Re: ad Bob, If you like the idea of rotating the ads from top to bottom, which I do, it would have to be done manually. I will take care of this task. <Appreciate this Mike... but/do you think this is "such a good idea"? On the one hand I do think/consider it a "fair" thing to do to have all's ads in the top space... but on the other, "first come, first served" and it does/should keep all paying up... for fear/reality of losing their placement... and what if you forget, aren't in town? (big sigh). Bob F, who wonders if you're coming by tonight for din din with Jack, Laura...> Mike

Re: ad Rick, The ads are static but I like your idea of having them rotate on perhaps a weekly basis. I will confer with Bob Fenner on this. I have included the new size standards we are implementing. Please let me know if you need any more assistance. You can e-mail me the ad/banner you wish to use and I will place it on the Web site immediately. You can send the payment of $200 to the following address. WetWebMedia 8586 Menkar Rd. Re: WWM advert. sales experiment I think the main benefit to having your logo on the WetWebMedias pages is just the recognition of your logo and company name, not necessaraly the click throughs. People will see your expensive print ads in the hobby magazines, which are static, and you hope they will respond to them. If these same hobbyists start to see your name and logo on every page view of the WWM site, than the next time they see it in the mags, it will look familiar and I think apt to be more trusted. Anyhow, that's my two cents worth. Mike <Well thought out, stated Miguel... do see where some chatforums have revolving ads for about $50/mo... assuring advertisers of 20k page views per month (most days we have more than this). Do you want to take Ken up, make an offer on a "revolving banner" ad campaign? Bob F>

Re: WWM advert. sales experiment I'm not sure how that revolving banner thing works. I do think that offering some kind of ad for $50 a month is a good idea though. <Really? What, where, how big? Will ask for more input from Knew re the R.B. Bob F> Mike

Please let me know how you want to proceed and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Michael Kaechele ([email protected]) www.Wetwebmedia.com
